Ruling party lawmaker shifts loyalty to opposition coalition

MP Saud meeting with lawmakers of Maumoon Faction soon after his decision

Lawmaker of Villingilli constituency Saud Hussain of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) joined the reform movement led by the former president and ousted leader of PPM Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom late Sunday.

After announcing his decision to join the opposition reform movement run together by Former President Maumoon, Former President Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim and Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla, Saud met with top officials of Maumoon’s former faction of the divided ruling PPM.

Saud, who had backed President Yameen at the time of internal political turmoil within PPM, explained that he changed sides due to the numerous injustices recently cast at Former President Maumoon.

Saud said that it is concerning that former presidents have lost their identity and prestige in the community as a result of the Maldives’ heated political unrest.
