The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) called on the authorities Wednesday to expedite investigations into threats and attacks against journalists and media, and to deliver justice.

In a statement released to mark World Press Freedom Day, HRCM declared that it is the responsibility of the state and community to establish a suitable environment for journalism.

The commission noted that it had received several reports and cases last year of warnings, threats and life-threatening inhuman acts against journalists and media outlets with regards to media freedom.

HRCM urged all institutions of the state to implement and maintain policies and laws that ensure independent and conscientious journalism. The commission highlighted the importance of facilitating education and training for journalists and reporters, and for state institutions to provide equal opportunities to obtain information for all media outlets.

The statement also called on all media to adhere to disciplinary boundaries and respect the rights of people in their field of work.
