Son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and lawmaker of Dhiggaru constituency, Faris Maumoon, declared on Tuesday that he has never bribed or offered a bribe to any lawmaker.

Police announced on Monday that they have evidence against MP Faris Maumoon that he had bribed some members of parliament to collect signatures for the opposition’s resolution to seek a third motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Denying the accusations, Faris proclaimed that there would not be any valid evidence, video audio or recording that would incriminate him as such, stating that he has not voiced anything unlawful. However, he noted that any such “evidence” can be created by anyone.

Faris added that the discussions held with several MPs to find support for the no confidence motion did not involve any form of bribery.

He stressed that the MPs are aware that pressure would follow them after the submission of the motion, adding that they are prepared for it.
