The police on Thursday stated that they have not yet finished their investigation into the issue of an audio recorder that was discovered under a lawyer’s chair during a meeting with the detained chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Lawyer Hisaan Hussain was meeting her client, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, at Dhoonidhoo custodial centre on March 14 where she allegedly found an audio recorder hidden under her chair. Hisaan along with some other lawyers at Dhoonidhoo at the time had brought the issue to media attention.

Hisaan had claimed that the police had refused to comment when the lawyers informed them of the issue as well.

At the time, the police had denied the lawyers’ claim of the hidden audio recorder and declared it to be a fabrication to defame the institution.

However, late the same day, Maldives Police Service had announced that they were investigating the matter.

Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan confirmed Thursday that the investigation is still ongoing. He did not provide further details.

Meanwhile, Hisaan stated that the police have not informed her of any developments.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed was arrested under the state of emergency declared on February 5 in the wake of the Supreme Court’s shocking ruling at the beginning of that month to release political prisoners and reinstate unseated legislators. In addition to Saeed, the top court’s Judge Ali Hameed and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom were also arrested the same night. The three of them are accused of bribery and conspiring to topple the government.
