Private firm partner to pay over MVR2 mln to jailed ex-defence minister

Shareholder of Sunland Hotels, Hussain Hilmy.

The Civil Court last Thursday ordered a shareholder of local firm Sunland Hotels Pvt Ltd, Hussain Hilmy, to pay over MVR 2 million owed to former Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim.

Nazim, who is sentenced to 11 years in jail over possession of a weapon, is currently serving his sentence at home. The verdict came against the Hussain Hilmy, who was formerly the Minister of Youth and Sports during Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s tenure, according to an agreement between Nazim and Hilmy.

Hussain Hilmy has agreed to the verdict and proposed to pay the amount of MVR 2.3 million starting from March till the end of July, to which Nazim has also agreed.

However, the verdict further states that should Nazim cash any cheques from a Bank of Ceylon account under the name of a company called Castaway Maldives, the transaction will be viewed as part of the money owed by Hussain Hilmy and will be cancelled from his debt accordingly. The reason, according to the verdict, is that the cheques were given to Nazim for Hilmy’s use.

Hilmy’s Sunland Hotels is a company which runs several resorts in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, a private company of which Nazim’s family are stakeholders, has filed a lawsuit against the children of Former President Maumoon seeking over MVR 2 million for the delayed payment of a project.
