President Yameen to rivals: Promise something new

Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has challenged opposition political leaders, daring them to promise something to the people which haven’t already been accomplished by his administration and include it in their manifesto for Presidential Elections 2018.

The challenge was issued by Yameen during ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s rally, Heskiyaafa, in Male’ City last Friday night.

During his speech at the rally, Yameen challenged his rivals to include in their manifesto to the people, something which hasn’t already been dared by his administration.

“I ask all opposition leaders, write something new in your manifesto and show it to me. If there is anything I haven’t touched up on, write it and show it to me,” said Yameen, during the rally attended by thousands of PPM supporters.

He said that promising, “this or that on housing” wasn’t anything new.

Yameen said that by the time his five-year term is complete, his administration would have built 15,000 housing units, making any promise on housing old news. He also said that “there won’t be anyone in need of housing” by the time his term in office is complete.

“Don’t talk about increasing the wealth of the Maldivian people. Don’t talk about the sovereignty of Maldives. Don’t talk about an independent State,” said Yameen.

He said that none of his rivals will be able to talk about anything which hasn’t been tackled by his administration.

“You won’t be able to show anything,” said Yameen.

“In front of me is the bridge. Just how many people’s dream is it? And just how many promised this dream. With the grace of Allah, this had become a reality,” said Yameen, pointing out the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge between Male’ City and Hulhule’ which is scheduled to open this year.

Yameen said he never initiated any personal war with his rivals, and that he was a man of peace.

Yameen, who has declared he will be running for a second term in office, said that he instead fought the challenges facing the Maldivian people.
