President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, at his press conference scheduled for this Thursday afternoon, will announce the date and time Abdulla Luthfee – the mastermind behind the terror plot of November 3, 1989 – will be extradited to the Maldives.
A source from within the government reported to ‘Sun’ that the paperwork required for Luthfee’s extradition is nearly complete. And that the President Solih is scheduled to announce the exact date and time Luthfee will be extradited this Thursday.
Sources report Luthfee may be extradited to the Maldives as soon as this Thursday. The claim is unverified, as of yet.
The foiled terror plot of November 3, 1988, to overthrow former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration killed 19 Maldivian citizens.
Luthfee was serving a life sentence for the crime when he went on the run after getting approved a medical furlough to travel to Sri Lanka on January 16, 2010.
He surrendered to officials at the Maldivian embassy in Colombo on May 1 amid security sweeps in the country following the Easter bombings on April 21.
The current administration has been under fire for failing to publicly release information regarding Luthfee’s surrender until after it was leaked to the local press on June 23 – weeks after his surrender.
