President ratifies Fourth Amendment to the Local Council Elections Act – Press Releases

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has ratified the fourth amendment to the Local Council Elections Act (Act No. 10/2010). The amendment bill was passed by the parliament on Wednesday, 8th February 2017, at the third sitting of the first session of the People’s Majlis. On ratification, the Act has now been published on the Government Gazette.

With the amendment to the Local Council Elections Act, the requirements of the contenders who participate in the Local Council Elections have been modified and this alteration will prohibit anybody who has committed rape or child abuse to participate in this election.

Moreover, anybody who was sentenced concerning drug dealing, that person can only participate in the Local Council Elections, if it has been 7 years since that person has served the sentence or if it has been 7 years since that person was given clemency from the government.
