An audio file was leaked late Tuesday of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s lawmakers criticising the actions of parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh and speaking in favour of removing him from position.
The audio file, which was leaked on social media, appears to feature PPM’s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan and some other lawmakers of uncertain number and identity. Mihaaru was unable to reach Nihan for comment regarding the file.
The recording seems to be of a meeting between a few parliamentarians.
One of the members featured on the audio said that giving a vote in favour of keeping Speaker Maseeh in position “would be very difficult”, the reason being that they “did not receive any help [from Maseeh] over the past two and a half years”.
Countering that member’s talk, Villimale MP Nihan responded that should they not vote in favour of Maseeh, “there is no 100 percent guarantee that we can put our man inside”. The context of the discussion indicates that MP Nihan meant they would face difficulties in placing their desired individual in the post of parliament speaker.
A member also suggested amending parliament regulations such that Maseeh can be replaced as the speaker.
This audio file was leaked amidst PPM parliamentary group’s preparations to vote in favour of keeping Speaker Maseeh in position in the upcoming parliament debate over the motion of no confidence lobbied against the speaker. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had also discussed the no confidence vote with his parliamentary group members last Monday night.
