Police announced Wednesday a reinvestigation into the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali and disappearance of Maldives Independent’s journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
In a press conference, Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shameem declared that the Major Crimes Investigation Centre is to take on the cases of Afrasheem and Rilwan, and assured that they will conduct deeper probes than before.
The Major Crimes Investigation Centre of Maldives Police Service was created very recently. It is also the unit investigating the brutal murder of prominent blogger Yameen Rasheed.
Dr Afrasheem Ali was killed in 2012 while Rilwan has been missing since August 2014. Two people were charged with Afrasheem’s murder out of which only Hussain Humam has been found guilty.
This Tuesday marked three years since Rilwan’s disappearance. Though Police had previously arrested a number of people in connection to the case, all suspects have been released and authorities have not announced any new leads in the investigation.
