Police to question two journalists of local TV channel

Police sent a summons to two journalists from local television channel Raajje TV, Ahmed Fairooz and Amzoon Ahmed, to present themselves to police headquarters on Tuesday.

According to Police, the two journalists are being summoned for questioning and to take their statements regarding an ongoing case. Police did not disclose further details.

Meanwhile, two other reporters and a cameraman of Raajje TV were recently convicted of obstructing police and fined.

In a state of emergency and “national security” climate, the media continue to be subjected to police brutality and government obstruction. Many Maldivian journalists have reported being the targets of death threats. According to a report published by the Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), political parties are the leading source of these threats to journalists, followed by criminal gangs and religious extremists. This poisonous climate reinforces self-censorship.
