Maldives Police Service on Tuesday took in the former commander of the Special Operations unit, Abdulla “Didi’ Ibrahim, for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The family of Ibrahim, who was stationed in Gemanafushi island in Gaafu Alif atoll, had claimed that the police had arrested him. However, Police later refuted the claim, stating that Ibrahim was summoned for a probe.
Ibrahim was taken under police custody from Velana International Airport upon his arrival from Gemanafushi.
Mihaaru understands that Ibrahim is accused of attempts to incite disorder amongst the police force in connection with the Supreme Court’s ruling February 1 to release political prisoners and reinstate unseated legislators.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan refused to confirm whether Ibrahim was still in custody, or details of the investigation against him.
Meanwhile, the police had arrested the former commander of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Hussain Saif, along with five other officers last month. Amongst them, Saif and Ibrahim appear to be close associates.
