Over a kilogram of drugs were found in a shop in capital Male City on Wednesday night, the police have confirmed.

According to the police, a shop and a house were searched under a warrant and over a kilogram of drugs wrapped in a plastic bag and substances believed to be drugs were found packed in 30 empty film canisters.

Two foreign nationals – a 25-year-old male and a 30-year-old male – were arrested from the scene, the police said.

The police did not reveal the name of the shop or the house that were searched; they did not reveal any further details regarding the two who were arrested either.

However, due to the large quantity of drugs that were seized, it is believed that the police had arrested a supplier or individuals with intent to sell, as the drugs had been distributed into smaller quantities as well.

The Drugs Act of the Maldives states that possession of over 14 grams of Cannabis carries a lifetime sentence and a penalty ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 1 million.
