Maldives Correctional Service has requested Police to find and apprehend the convicted former lawmaker, Ahmed Nazim, who absconded upon being allowed to go abroad for medical treatment.

Correctional Service’s spokesperson stated Thursday that they filed the request at Maldives Police Service as Nazim has a long jail sentence to serve. He “disappeared” after the period of time allocated by Correctional Service to stay abroad.

The Supreme Court sentenced him to 25 years in jail over fraud. The government allowed him to go to Singapore to seek medical treatment in 2015 and extended his stay twice. However, authorities refused the third extension last year March and ordered Nazim to return to the Maldives within 48 hours.

However, Nazim had absconded and fled to the United Kingdom where he still apparently resides.
