Galholhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof and Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla have been released from Police custody after they were arrested from an opposition rally late Wednesday.
Mahloof told Mihaaru that they have no issues with the police and that the police had handled procedures accordingly.
After the Supreme Court ruling to release political leaders, the opposition and its supporters have been gathering at Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s main hub every night to voice their support for the verdict. The police have intervened every night and broken up the gatherings, often using pepper spray to disperse the crowds. Some people were badly affected and had to be treated at ADK Hospital.
Though the initial ruling has been revoked by the three remaining judges at the Supreme Court after Chief of Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed were arrested during the state of emergency, the opposition gatherings continue every night.
