Maldives Police Service on Friday night arrested and eventually released member of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ibrahim Afraath, and raided the house of PPM’s Secretary General appointed by Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of PPM, Abdulla Aleem, over allegedly bribing lawmakers to vote in favor of the impending no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Moosa Manik of the parliament.

Before arresting Afraath, Police raided his home under a court order, which stated that Afraath is suspected to have been hiding the bribery money at his house. Police confiscated his mobile phone before his release.

Afraath is a supporter of Former President Maumoon, who is the ousted leader of PPM. He backed Maumoon during the division of factions in PPM.
