The police issued a notice late Wednesday, searching for Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed and Machangolhi South MP Abdulla Sinan who were two of the lawmakers declared disqualified from the parliament by the Elections Commission last year.

In a statement by the police on their official website, the police announced that they have been unable to summon the MPs as they are not residing in the Maldives at the moment. They also stated that they have been unable to hand over the official summons, as the parliamentarians current residing addresses are not known to the police.

Both Sinan and Ilham are required to be present at the police for questioning within 14 days starting from January 31. Police added that if they fail to do so, necessary legal actions will be taken against them.

Police revealed that both MPs are needed for questioning regarding Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon’s ongoing bribery case.

Although Sinan and Ilham used to have close connections with President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim, both MPs have been living abroad for over 11 months after a conflict. They were dismissed from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) after they moved abroad and the Elections Commission had disqualified them from the parliament upon PPM’s request.

Sinan had called out the police on Twitter for visiting and “threatening” his family for political agendas. He also stated that he will be returning to the Maldives soon, to answer any questions from the police.
