Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s eldest son, Ibrahim Siyad, was arrested Tuesday evening.
Maldives Police Service announced the arrest in a tweet, stating that Siyad was taken into custody in connection with an ongoing investigation.
No further details were revealed.
The son of the local tycoon is currently heading his father’s business conglomerate, Villa Group.
Police had also launched raids on Villa Building in capital Male and the Villa-managed Paradise Island Resort earlier that afternoon. The reason for the raids is yet unclear.
Qasim Ibrahim, who was convicted to three years in jail on bribery charges, is currently in Germany under political asylum. He is one of nine prominent political leaders that the Supreme Court had ordered to release in its landmark ruling last Thursday night.
However, the government is at a deadlock on the court order and had declared a 15-day state of emergency late Monday. With the exception of Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon, none of the other convicted politicians has been released from custody yet.
