Maldives Police Service on Monday night arrested the lawmaker of Thulushdhoo constituency, Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, who has lost his seat as declared by the Elections Commission.

Waheed was arrested under a court order around 11:40 pm. while he was with other lawmakers in front of Jumhoory Part’s main activity hub. Police officers took him away in a police vehicle after showing him the arrest warrant.

According to the warrant signed by Judge Ali Adam of the Criminal Court, Waheed is arrested for breaking through police barricades and forcefully entering the parliament on Monday despite no longer being a lawmaker. The warrant read that he may prove a threat to the community as well attempt to jeopardise evidence if not detained.

The evidence presented against Waheed is a letter and copy from the Parliament administration.

Police had previously arrested Waheed alongside Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth on Monday afternoon for the same reason before releasing them.

Waheed is among the six members which the EC has declared ousted from their seats. However, the Supreme Court has accepted the cases of four of these MP’s, including Waheed, requesting to withdraw the decision. The other lawmakers are MP Ameeth of Maduvvari constituency, MP Saud Hussain of Villingilli constituency and MP of Dhidhdhoo constituency Abdul Latheef Mohamed.

The two lawmakers that have not filed the cases at the Supreme Court are MP of Dhangethi constituency Ilham Ahmed and MP of Machangolhi South constituency Abdulla Sinan who are both currently abroad.
