Police again commenced a raid on the residence of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s lawmaker son, Faris Maumoon, who was arrested Tuesday under an accusation of bribing lawmakers and spreading undue influence to gain support for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker.

The raid commenced while Dhiggaru MP Faris was in the Criminal Court for a ruling regarding his remand. Police brought MP Faris to court under their custody around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. However, the Criminal Court is yet to announce a decision.

According to sources, Police confiscated Faris’ laptop, check books, bank statements and forms, and storage devices during the first raid on Wednesday in order to gather more evidence to back the bribery allegations.

The nephew of President Abdulla Yameen, MP Faris Maumoon is one of the political leaders at the head of the opposition coalition. His father, former President Maumoon, declared in the wake of his arrest that Faris’ determination and strength will not waver in the face of adversity and harassment, and called on opposition members to remain steadfast.
