The Prosecutor General’s office has announced that it is working towards releasing all the political prisoners as per the Supreme Court’s ruling, and it is also preparing the necessary documents to raise certain issues with the order to Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed.
In a statement released Friday evening, the Prosecutor General’s office claimed that the Chief Justice had instructed it to follow due procedure when enforcing the top court’s order issued late Thursday night.
The statement also said that the office is currently working with relevant state institutions to amass all the paperwork of the recently freed political prisoners since some of them were still in trial at the time the order was issued, while others had already been sentenced.
The Prosecutor General’s office stated that there were also legal matters in some of the cases of the freed politicians that they would like to clarify with the apex court.
Attorney General Mohamed Anil on Friday revealed that after deliberating with Maldives Police Service, it will submit some concerns regarding the court’s most recent ruling, which also reinstated the 13 unseated lawmakers and nullified the floor crossing ruling which resulted in the lawmakers’ ousting.
Meanwhile, the lawyers of the released political prisoners and the unseated MPs continue to express concern over the government’s delay in enforcing the apex court’s order as none of them have officially been released from custody yet.
