President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the peace and harmony of a community is defined by the efficiency of its police force, and that unrest in a community brings to question, the performance of the police. He made this remark while speaking at the ceremony held to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Maldives Police Service.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President stated that the peace and harmony of a community was in the hands of the police, and pointed out that today peace has been restored in the Maldives. Highlighting the scope of the work done by the Maldives Police Service today, the President noted that their work wasn’t a stereotypical desk job anymore. He underscored the tremendous amount of slander the police had to combat daily, internally and internationally. The President commended the police service for their work done in collaboration with other countries and the Interpol, in battling cross border terrorism, cybercrime and all other cross border crimes. He stated that no community could maintain their peace without police, pointing out that the Police worked tirelessly around the clock, throughout the year.

In his speech, the President said that the country’s police force was the tool empowered by the Police Act, as well as the entity that was made accountable by the same Act. He reminded all police officers to be patient in performing their duties and to always keep in mind that their service was for the whole community.

President Yameen underlined the current political situation in the Maldives and condemned the actions of certain political figures trying to bring unrest to the country. He noted that it must be a challenge for the police officers to listen to their former seniors demeaning the service.

Further, President Yameen noted that some foreign parties were issuing statements commenting on the internal affairs of the country, and reiterated that this administration would not tolerate such interference. He pointed out that the Maldives had principles of its own and that their was no reason to compare them with those of other countries.
