The parliament has rejected the emergency motion filed by a member of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding the brutal murder of blogger and social media activist Yameen Rasheed.

The emergency motion was filed last April by Hithadhoo South MP Ali Nizar calling for an independent probe into the case of Yameen Rasheed, who was found murdered with multiple stab wounds in the stairway of his apartment building in capital Male in late March.

Nizar told Mihaaru on Sunday that the parliament decided against putting the case on the agenda for its sitting on Monday as the current situation does not deem it as an emergency case. He added that the parliament has informed him that the subject matter no longer applies for the case.

MP Nizar declared that he had filed the motion in accordance with parliamentary regulations. He also cited the parliament’s Secretary General Ahmed Mohamed that there is no reason to throw out the case.

The Secretary General stated that any decision made by the parliament regarding the emergency motion will be announced on Monday’s sitting when the parliament comes out of recess.

MP Nizar highly censured the parliament’s decision to reject the case, proclaiming that it only further proved that members of the opposition are given no power to hold the government accountable or strengthen independent institutions via the parliament.

“This is not something that we can remain silent over,” he said. “There is still fear for the citizens. Yameen’s family are still in the dark about the progress of the investigation.”
