Parliament endorses 8 foreign ambassador nominees

Parliament has endorsed eight names submitted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for heads of diplomatic missions.

The Parliament voted on the nominees this Wednesday afternoon upon conclusion of evaluations by the Committee on National Security.

They are:

  • Maldivian Ambassador to Belgium and the Permanent Representative of Maldives at the EU, Hassan Sobir. Sobir has previously served as Minister of Fisheries and Minister of Tourism during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, and as Maldivian Ambassador to the UK, Maldivian Ambassador to Singapore and Permanent Representative of Maldives at the EU.
  • Maldivian Ambassador to India, Aishath Mohamed Didi. Aishath Mohamed Didi previously served as Minister of Gender during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
  • Maldivian Ambassador to Singapore, Dr Abdulla Mausoom. Dr Mausoon previously served as Minister of Tourism during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
  • Maldivian Ambassador to Germany, Ahmed Latheef (Seaweed Latheef): Latheef previously served as Maldivian Ambassador to India and Maldivian Ambassador to China.
  • Maldivian Ambassador to the UK, Dr Farhanaz Faisal. Dr Farhanaz served as Maldivian Ambassador to the UK during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration. She has previously served as a Non-Resident Representative of Maldives to several European countries.
  • Permanent Representative of Maldives at the UN and Maldivian Ambassador to the US, Thilmeeza Hussain. Thimleeza previously served as Deputy Permanent Representative to UN. And served as State Minister for Home Affairs during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.
  • Maldivian Ambassador to Malaysia, Wisam Ali. Wisam is former parliamentary representative of Maduvvari constituency. And also served at the former Atolls Ministry.
  • Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Umar Abdul Razzaq. Umar is a member of the Joint Foreign Relations Committee of the coalition and a member of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s national council.

Seven of the nominees won approval of the unanimous consensus of all Parliament members present during voting. Meanwhile, Umar, President’s nominee for Ambassador to Sri Lanka, won approval with the majority vote of 55 lawmakers. Two abstained.

President Solih has nominated three more names for heads of diplomatic missions.

They are:

  • Mohamed Jinah, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand
  • Mohamed Khaleel, Ambassador to Saudi Arabia
  • Aishath Azeema, Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China

President’s Office reports the new names were submitted to the Parliament last Tuesday.
