The Economic Committee of Parliament on Monday passed the amendment to the Import Export Act in order to limit the duty taken from petrol and diesel to five percent.

The five pro-government lawmakers in the Economic Committee passed the amendment without any changes, which was lobbied by ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Parliamentary Group leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.

Currently, a duty of 10 percent is taken from petrol and diesel.

During the committee meeting, Jumhoory Party (JP)’s lawmaker Abdulla Riyaz proposed to cancel all duty from petrol and diesel. However, this amendment seconded by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s lawmaker of Gan constituency Fayyaz was not passed.
