The parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions on Monday approved to appoint the managing director of state utility company Fenaka Corporation, Ahmed Shareef, as a member of the Elections Commission (EC).

President Abdulla Yameen nominated Ahmed Shareef to be appointed as a member of the electoral watchdog following the resignation of Elections Commissioner Ahmed Suleiman in January. The parliamentary committee gave the green light to appoint Shareef after the issue was forwarded to the committee for review during Monday’s sitting.

The committee, led by the ruling coalition’s majority, had given Shareef 77 percent marks after the interview. The committee considers the individuals nominated eligible only if they receive a total mark above the average of 75 percent.

With the committee’s approval, the matter would now be sent to the parliament floor for a vote.

Shareef had previously worked at the Elections Commission and also served as the Member of Parliament for Thimarafushi constituency. After the expiration of the parliament term, he had been appointed as the Deputy Minister of Education and later as the head of Fenaka Cooperation.
