The parliament on Sunday closed doors on the meeting between the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s delegation and the Parliament committees on Economic Affairs and Public Finance.

The media were invited to the meeting which was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The parliament did not offer a reason for the abrupt decision to hold the meeting behind closed doors.

The IMF delegation arrived in the Maldives on July 5 to look into the economic situation of the archipelago. The delegation has so far met with lawmakers and Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)’s Governor Dr Azeema Adam. However, it remains unclear whether the delegation has yet met with the Minister of Finance and Treasury Ahmed Munawar.

Mihaaru understands that the five-member team is scheduled to hold a press conference at MMA on Monday.

The delegation is due to leave the Maldives on July 18.

IMF releases an annual report on the Maldivian economy which details the challenges facing the nation’s economic progress and suggestions to help overcome them.
