Over 20 people have been injured in a fire that broke out in a warehouse building in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale during the early hours of Sunday.

According to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the warehouse in the industrial zone of Hulhumale belongs to local Damas Company Pvt Ltd. The fire broke out in an upper floor after 1:30 a.m. and was controlled and put out around 2:00 a.m.

The people injured were expatriate workers, hailing from India and Bangladesh, who reside in the building’s staff quarters. They are senior staff of Amin Construction Pvt Ltd’s project to develop 300 flats in Hulhumale. Some of the residents sustained burns while a number of others broke their arms or legs after jumping off the third floor as “there was no other way [to escape].”

Aasandha Company, which manages Hulhumale Hospital, reported that total 21 people were taken to Hulhumale Hospital after the fire, out of which nine people have been transferred to capital Male for further treatment.

An official of Amin Construction added that aluminium materials, which were procured for the company’s flat development project, were stored in the warehouse on the ground floor of the building. The fire did not cause much damage to the items in the warehouse.
