Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon’s sister Yumna Maumoon met with members of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) on Monday to raise concerns regarding his detention.
In a tweet, Yumna said, “Met with members of the @hrcmv today to share family’s concern’s about the arbitrary arrest and detention of my brother MP @afarismaumoon.”
Yumna, who has been leading the efforts to free her brother, had not given any details of the meeting.
After being detained for over six months, Faris was released on January 25 under certain conditions, only to be arrested again on January 27. This time he was arrested for allegedly planning a coup against the government with other parliamentarians along with bribery charges.
The Criminal Court had added 15 days to his remand. His team of lawyers has taken the issue of his arrest to court claiming it was done illegally.
Before his arrest, Police had searched his residence as well as his father’s, the former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. However, Police had since stated that they did not find any evidence pertaining to the accusations against Faris at either of the places.
