Senior member of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and MP for Machangolhi North constituency, Maariya Ahmed Didi, resigned from the parliament’s Committee on Secondary Legislation on Thursday.

In a letter to the parliament’s administration, the MP stated that there has been no progress in carrying out the committee’s mandate even three years after its formation. She accused parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh and lawmakers of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), who hold the parliament majority, as the culprits.

She went on to say that there is currently no order to the functioning of the Secondary Legislation Committee, adding that the speaker conducts parliamentary sittings according to his own wishes.

Reiterating the long hiatus of the committee, she declared that she is resigning as she has no desire of being part of the “uncouth actions” that are spoiling the reputation and functioning of the committee.
