Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s lawmaker son Faris Maumoon on Sunday appealed the court order to remand him until the end of his bribery trial.

Dhiggaru MP Faris was arrested last week for allegedly bribing lawmakers to gather signatures for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker. The Criminal Court has ordered his detention until the end of his trial while Police have also raided his residence in capital Male on two counts with a court order.

In a tweet, MP Faris’ lawyer Maumoon Hameed declared that they have filed to appeal all three court orders to arrest Faris, detain him until the end of his trial, and to search his residence for evidence.

MP Faris’ legal team also claims that the lawmaker is being held in Dhoonidhoo custodial unlawfully and, thus, MP Faris had refused to comment during the investigation.
