Top officials of the joint opposition have expressed concerns to members of the European Union (EU) over not being able to conduct political activities in the Maldives.
Head of the opposition delegation, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s lawmaker of North Henveiru constituency Abdulla Shahid said that during the meeting held at Brussels, Belgium, discussions were carried out about the current political situation, and the challenges and obstructions faced in freedom of expression in the Maldives.
The delegation included Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s daughter Yumna Maumoon, former Managing Director of STO Adam Azim and Former Education Minister Dr Asim Mohamed of Jumhoory Party.
Speaking to Mihaaru, Shahid stated that it was brought to the EU’s attention that the government has not paid heed to the Union’s previous call to hold all-party talks, free opposition political leaders and allocate space to hold political activities.
Highlighting the recent murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed, Shahid added that things are getting worse day by day while journalists are facing riskier situations and being unfairly punished.
Moreover, noting that the opposition has succeeded the Local Council Election, Shahid said that the opposition officials told EU that the results of Local Council Election is being delayed without reason, and that some staff working in public companies are being laid off as “the results cannot be digested by the government”.
