The opposition coalition on Tuesday met with the United Nation’s Resident Coordinator in the Maldives over the arrests of Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim and other politicians of the opposition.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting with the UN Resident Coordinator Shoko Noda, Henveiru North MP Abdulla Shahid stated that the opposition has shared information regarding the government’s actions against opposition leaders, obstruction of journalism and media, manipulation of independent institutions and the current situation of the Maldives with the coordinator.
“We’re informing [the UN] of the government’s transgressions by hijacking the parliament and controlling the judiciary,” said Shahid, who was the former foreign minister and parliamentary speaker.
