The opposition coalition called late Sunday again for the immediate release of former Defence Minister, Colonel Mohamed Nazim and leader of religiously conservative Adhaalath Party, Sheikh Imran Abdulla, from jail.

In a statement released by the joint opposition, they expressed concern over the detention and isolation of both leaders in what they described to be an inhumane act.

The statement highlighted that Imran, who is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence over inciting violence during an opposition protest, suffers from several medical disorders. However, they proclaimed that his cell does not have proper ventilation and toilet facilities, adding that he is forced to sleep on the ground.

The statement added that political leaders in jail are made to suffer due to the success of the joint opposition’s efforts against the government.
