The opposition coalition on Monday called on all government aligned lawmakers to join forces with the coalition in its efforts to reform the nation.
In a joint statement by the three opposition parties of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Adhaalath Party and Jumhoory Party along with the faction of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s ousted leader, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, they declared that the recent shift in loyalties of certain lawmakers to the opposition coalition is testimony to the declining support for incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the parliament.
Prominent parliamentarians of the government coalition PPM/Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) such as Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth and Villingili MP Saud Hussain recently joined the opposition coalition. Ameeth has thus been terminated from PPM while Saud was removed from PPM’s parliamentary group chat.
The opposition coalition declared in its statement that its parties are working to restore democracy, and free and fair elections to the Maldives as well as revive the infringed basic rights of the people. The coalition called on government lawmakers to side with the citizens and to “stop rubber stamping” the president’s wishes.
