The joint opposition urged government supporters Sunday to cease all attempts to influence the vote on the upcoming motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Speaking at a press conference, Chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Hassan Latheef, proclaimed that the government has run out of options regarding the no-confidence motion and claimed that the administration has failed in their new game plan.

In addition, Secretary General of Jumhoory Party Ahmed Sameer stressed that independent institutions must investigate the influence of the government on the vote.

“We hear that [government officials] are going abroad, bringing things in large bags; this information has been broadcast and posted by local media and on social media, and it needs to investigated by independent institutions,” added Sameer.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s daughter Yumna Maumoon said that several lawmakers are being pressured and facing threats. Declaring that they remain strong nonetheless, she called to prevent such actions and for institutions to work independently without influence.

The opposition also noted that some lawmakers of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) are leaving the party, saying that the MPs are displeased with PPM’s policies.
