Official talks were held this evening, as part of the official visit by the Prime Minister of Pakistan H.E. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to the Maldives. The Maldivian delegation at the official talks was led by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and the Pakistani delegation was led by Prime Minister of Pakistan H.E. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
Discussions mainly focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of economics, education, health, tourism, youth and sports. The President and the Pakistani Prime Minister also discussed matters of mutual interest at international and regional levels.
The two leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining good neighbourly relations, highlighted ways to strengthen bonds between SAARC countries. President Yameen and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif stressed the importance of solving issues through dialogue.
Speaking at the official talks, President Yameen stated that the top priority of this administration was achieving economic resilience, and said that the newly introduced Special Economic Zones framework provides special economic incentives and introduces a flexible environment for mega investments in the Maldives. He also underscored that foreign direct investment was the fundamental force driving the Government’s economic agenda. He further reiterated the Government’s commitment to providing the optimum policy and statutory environment for doing business in the Maldives.
The Pakistani Prime Minister noted that the signing of six important MoUs taking place this evening, symbolises the trust, cordiality, and mutual respect between the two countries, on which our bilateral bond was based on. He also conveyed Pakistan’s interest in providing training programmes to the Maldives, especially in the areas of human resource capacity building, and professional trainings for civil service.
Prior to the official talks, President Yameen and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had a one-to-one meeting at the President’s Office.
