Former President Mohamed Nasheed declared Monday that President Abdulla Yameen’s recent actions leave no option but for the opposition to impeach him.
Nasheed, who is currently in neighbouring Sri Lanka, stated in a tweet, “President Yameen’s latest egregious actions regarding the judiciary leave no option but to submit a motion for his impeachment.”
His criticism comes in the wake of the government filing a constitutional case at the Supreme Court seeking a ruling that will remove lawmakers from their parliament seats should they leave their political parties or shift to another party. The government filed the case amidst several lawmakers of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) resigning from the party after they signed the joint opposition’s resolution to seek a motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker.
Out of ten PPM lawmakers that signed the petition, eight have hastily left the ruling party. Five resigned from PPM on Monday with Machangolhi South MP Abdulla Sinan, Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla, Thinadhoo North MP Saudullah Hilmy, Thinadhoo South MP Abdulla Ahmed and Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq.
Meanwhile, three other lawmakers, Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed and Hanimaadhoo MP Hussain Shahudhy, quit PPM last week.
