The Maldives’ electoral watchdog on Friday stated that they have not come across any errors or problems in ballot boxes to affect the results of the Local Council Election which was held last Saturday.
The Elections Commission broke the security seals of 24 ballot boxes Thursday afternoon to check the ballots for errors and recount the votes to confirm the result sheets. Recounting took place through Thursday evening and on Friday as well. The reopened ballot boxes include those representing Galolhu South constituency, Maafushi Prison constituency and Fuvahmulah Central constituency.
EC member Ahmed Akram said on Friday that the ballot boxes being recounted on Friday were the same ones unsealed the previous day. He confirmed that they have not encountered any problems that could affect the results of the Local Council Election yet.
Vote recounting is taking place in the presence of candidates’ representatives, and the observers and monitors of the election. The result sheets are announced immediately after the recheck and ballot boxes resealed in their presence.
