Nasreena requests Maumoon be transferred to house arrest for Ramadan

Former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim has sent a letter to the Criminal Court and Prosecutor General’s Office requesting her husband, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom be transferred to house arrest for the duration of Ramadan.

“Sun” has received a copy of the letter.

Nasreena wrote in the letter that Maumoon has been diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which made doing anything without assistance impossible for Maumoon.

She said having to spend the holy month of Ramadan in Dhoonidhoo Custodial posed immense difficulties for Maumoon and appealed for him to be transferred to house arrest for the duration.

The former Maldivian President was arrested from his residence within hours his half-brother, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared a state of emergency in the country.

Maumoon is one of the key suspects in the attempt to stage a coup using the Supreme Court order on February 1, which called for the release of nine opposition politicians and reinstatement of 12 lawmakers.

He has been charged with terrorism following the investigation into the case and charged with obstruction of justice for refusing to surrender his phone to the police following his arrest.
