MTCC awarded MVR13m project to redevelop artificial beach

The housing ministry on Tuesday awarded an MVR13 million (US$843,000) five-month project to the state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company to redevelop Malé’s eastern artificial beach.

Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizz told the press at the agreement signing ceremony that the swimming area will be deepened and an outdoor gym, cafés, seats and open showers will be built at the beach.

Cafés and restaurants at the beach have been given notice to shut down for five months.

The government allocated MVR10 million for the project and MTCC will spend MVR3 million under its corporate social responsibility programme, he noted.

MTCC also developed the Rasfannu western artificial beach in Malé at a cost of MVR40 million in 2016.

The capital’s natural beaches were lost to reclamation and shore protection over the past decades.

Muizz said the beach redevelopment is part of the current administration’s efforts to create parks and open public spaces in the densely packed city.
