MNU: Free higher education will expand MNU’s services

Free higher education in the Maldives will expand the operations of the national university, says Maldives National University (MNU).

Speaking during the inauguration of members of the seventh session of the executive committee of Maldives National University Student’s Union (MNUSU) last Tuesday night, Vice Chancellor of MNU, Dr Ali Fawaz Shareef noted that free higher education was a key campaign promise by President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Fawaz said that free higher education in the Maldives will expand the university’s operations.

He said the work of the MNUSU needs to be expanded to correspond with the expansion of the university’s operations.

MNU announced plans to build a large campus in Hulhumale’ last September.

The university says it is holding negotiations with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and will start construction of the new campus as soon as it obtains land permits.

The university also recently established a new science facility, the School of Medicine, which is scheduled to start medicine courses soon.

MNU teaches approximately 9,000 students via its campuses in the capital and the atolls, and its open learning centers.

The university has campuses in H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi, G. Dh. Thinadhoo, L. Gan and S. Hithadhoo.
