Local leading Cable TV provider Medianet has requested Maldives Broadcasting Commission to review the fine of MVR 500,000 imposed on Medianet over broadcasting the Al-Jazeera expose “Stealing Maldives”, a documentary exposing mass corruption, international money laundering and abuse of power in the Maldives.

A senior official of Medianet stated that they requested the commission to review the fine as there are certain contradictions. He added that further comment on the matter will only be given after receiving the commission’s response.

According to sources, Broadcasting Commission has given only a period of one month, which is due this June 15, for Medianet to pay the fine.

The fine was issued over broadcasting content deemed dangerous to national security.

Regarding the matter, Executive Financier of Medianet, Ahmed Nashid slammed the Broadcasting Commission saying that the commission must become more responsible itself before issuing fines on other companies.
