The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) made no effort to increase electricity capacity in the capital, Male, during the three years of the MDP’s short-lived regime, declared President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom late Sunday.

Countering the criticism aimed at the government in the wake of the power outage and water supply interruption for three hours in Male on Sunday, the president proclaimed that the current regime is burdened with picking up the pieces, after the MDP’s administration failed to increase Male’s power generation capacity.

Speaking at the introduction ceremony for government coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)’s candidates for the upcoming Local Council Elections, President Yameen noted that oil prices have significantly gone up compared to twenty years ago when the state could purchase oil for MVR 3 per litre. He stated that minimum wholesale prices are currently over MVR 8 per litre.

“With these prices, how can we sell a litre for MVR 2.50 like we did before?” he pointed out.
