Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) claimed late Tuesday that the government is plotting to axe the candidacy of MDP’s candidates for the upcoming Local Council Elections.

In a statement, MDP reiterated that the state is refusing to hold the local elections within the period of time specified in the Constitution and has compromised the elections’ independence and fairness. MDP also declared that the government is forcing the Elections Commission and judicial courts to act such that public trust in the elections has been lost.

The opposition party condemned the government’s alleged plan to abolish the candidacy of MDP’s hopefuls for the Local Council Elections and called on the state to put an immediate stop to such plots. Stating that the government is unconstitutionally using Police to frame opposition candidates as a means to axe their candidacies, MDP further accused the state of delaying the local elections to ensure more time to do away with rival candidates.
