The faction of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s ousted leader, Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, has kicked out PPM’s Parliamentary Group Leader Ahmed Nihan and Deputy Leader Ilham Ahmed from the party.

The party has been divided into two after the court’s order to handover the control of the party from its Leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to its Advisor the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. Since then both factions have been making party decisions, claiming to be the true leadership of PPM.

The secretary general of Maumoon’s faction Abdul Aleem said that Nihan and Ilham were dismissed from the party at a meeting of their disciplinary committee last Wednesday. Reasons for Nihan’s dismissal include violating the party’s charter and in relation to his leaked audio file about the selling of Faafu atoll.
