Maldivian defeated Ooredoo on penalties by 14-13 in the Quarter Final of Club Maldives Cup 2018. The normal time of the match ended 5-5 after a series of dramatic actions.
The thrilling match lasted for more than an hour as the time was stopped during out of play, which is a different rule to continue from the Quarter Final matches of the competition, like previous years.
Mohamed Fashir of Ooredoo scored the opener of the match after a wonderful one-two pass at the edge of the Maldivian’s goal area. That was his 10th goal in the competition.
However a minute later, Maldivian was awarded a penalty for a foul committed in Ooredoo’s goal area. Abdulla Shaffan (Shaakaa) came into the game from the bench and fired the equalizer for Maldivian.
Then came a moment for Ooredoo, where they dominated the match for about five minutes and produced more danger to the goal of Maldivian to get their lead back. As such, Haafiz Ahmed scored another goal to make it 2-1.
Meanwhile, Fashir of Ooredoo was close to extending their lead before the halftime, as he hit the post twice and provided a wonderful assist in a counter attack, which was saved by Maldivian’s goalkeeper.
Hussain Afsal equalized for Maldivian as the second half began, with a brilliant back flick goal.
Abdulla Shaffan took the lead for Maldivian for the first time in the match when he easily netted the cross which was placed to the face of the goal from Hamdhaan Abdul Sattar.
Haafiz Ahmed got back the lead for Ooredoo again, where he equalized by a rebound from a shot by Fashir. His third goal, which made the scoreline 4-3 to Ooredoo was a screamer as he kicked the ball from outside foot, to curl it into the far side of the goal.
A couple of minutes later Hamdhaan Abdul Sattar (Hamty) of Maldivian scored the equalizer again to make it 4-4, which was followed by another goal, this time from Ahmed Abdul Azeez to take the lead inside the last minutes of the game to take a late lead to Maldivian.
Ooredoo didn’t let them seal the match that way, as Haafiz Ahmed scored his 4th goal of the night to make the score 5-5.
In the penalty shootout, each team took 11 penalty kicks searching for a winner.
Hussain Afsal scored the winning penalty to take Maldivian to the Semi Final of the Club Maldives Cup 2018.
