The Maldives has withdrawn its name to run for the next term on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
In a statement, the Geneva mission stated that the Maldives has withdrawn its name to run for the term of 2018-2020 in order to apply for another term later. They added that the next term will be soon announced.
The Maldives was a member of the UNHRC twice earlier, which is believed to be the second most powerful branch of the UN.
Furthermore, the archipelago is now trying to secure a temporary seat on its most powerful branch, the UN Security Council. In the election scheduled for next year, the Maldives will be competing against Indonesia.
While the island nation has pull outed from vying for UNHRC, several countries have expressed concern over the country’s human rights’ situation, which the Maldives has countered.
