The Maldives electoral watchdog confirmed Wednesday that four lawmakers have lost their seats in parliament and thus by-elections will be held for their respective constituencies.

In a statement, the Elections Commission declared that Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, Villingili MP Saud Hussain, Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth and Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed have lost their seats in accordance with the Supreme Court’s ruling last week that lawmakers who resign or are expelled from the political parties they are registered to at the time of election, or those who shift parties will lose their seats.

The four lawmakers formerly of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) were ousted as PPM informed the EC of their resignation and expulsions as per the top court’s ruling.

Despite the confirmation, the EC is yet to announce the by-elections.

Parliament regulations mandate that by-elections be held within a period of 60 days after seats are vacated.
