The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday announced that it will temporarily begin accepting visa applications from Maldivian citizens seeking to live in the UK.
The ministry, in conjunction with the British Embassy in the Maldives, will begin accepting visa applications from its main headquarters in capital Male’ on August 16, between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays.
However, the ministry did not reveal when it will discontinue this service.
According to the ministry, the temporary arrangement has been made especially for the convenience of Maldivian students travelling to the UK for higher education.
Even though Maldivian citizens travelling to the UK get up to six months visa-on-arrival, those who wish to remain in the country for longer are required to apply for the relevant visas before they depart. Applications are typically submitted and processed from the British High Commission in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
However, due to the growing number of Maldivian students travelling to the UK, the foreign ministry has been making arrangements for the students to submit their visa applications directly to their office in Male’ for over five years now.
